Scavengepump FAQs

Q Which pump should I get for my T88 (RHB6, T04b or any other turbo)?

A Our scavengepumps will work with any turbocharger. The flow capacity of the pump must be able to keep up with the oil flow through the turbo charger. One way to know if the pump has enough capacity for your turbo installation is to measure the amount of oil that flows through the turbo at idle. It is always best to confirm the actual total flow but you should feel pretty safe in relying on the turbo manufacturers specifications. One problem is that many times these figures are not published.

Using a single regular flow scavenge pump is most successful when installations are using single 2.5 ”~3.0” turbo chargers. The HiFlo unit works fine with smaller units but can also handle 3.5" and larger turbo chargers. If you have a ball-bearing center section the oil requirements are lessened since the oil feed can (and should) be reduced from that of a plain bearing unit.

If the oil flow is not greater than .75 quarts per minute at idle...then the regular unit has enough capacity.

If the flow is more than .75qpm at idle but less than 2qpm at idle, you should use our HiFlo model.

Dual pumps are an appropriate approach for twin turbo installations.

Q I need a pump because of the location of my turbo, (lower than the engine oil level) oil is building up, will either of your pumps work?

A As stated above, they will work fine but the flow rate of the scavenge pump(s) must match or exceed the rates indicated in the first Q&A above.

Q Will the scavenge pump remove too much oil from my turbo charger?

A No, the pump will remove the oil only after it has acted as a lubricant within the bearing housing, this helps prevent the oil from backing up into the turbocharger.

Q Can this pump be on constantly while the car is running?

A Yes the pump is made for constant use. Some consideration for air flow around the pump should be given as the pump will create some heat on its own along with the heat transferred from the oil flowing through it.

Q How long do these pump generally last?

A I personally have one on a turbo charged truck, it has been in use for 9 years and 55,000 miles.

Q Does oil need to be constantly flowing through the pump so that it won't burn up?

A No, the pump can run 'dry' but I do not suggest that you have it running for 10s of minutes (like listening to music with the engine off). I also recommend hooking it up through a relay, so that it is only ON when the engine ignition is 'hot' and the engine is running.

Q How loud is this pump?

A On a motorcycle you can hear the hum of the pump if the engine isn't running. If it is mounted in the engine compartment of a car/truck (forward toward the radiator area) you probably would not notice it if the engine were running. When you are setting within the interior, I doubt that you will hear it.

Q Does it take a lot of electricity, will it stall my car from taking too much electricity if I'm at idle/700 rpms?

A The power requirements are listed on the scavenge pump web page. I don't know if this will affect your vehicle…that depends on the alternators charging rate, the battery size, the other components that are on and how much power they are drawing. If your electrical system is marginal right now then yes it will pull it down even further…if you don't have obvious difficulties at present I would 'guess' that you will not need to make any changes to your vehicles charging system.

Q Does this pump actually pump oil from the turbo to the oil pan or does it only remove air pockets from the oil?

A It pumps the oil back to your pan if that is where your return line runs to.

Q I received my pump and it does not look like the one on your web site.

A The casing was polished to improve the appearance of the pump shown on the web page. A mounting plate is prefitted to all pumps and fittings are supplied but not installed. We do not recommend polishing the pump as that will increase the heat retention and will ultimately shorten the life of the motor and pump.
